Experience

I love helping students of all ages improve their Reading and Writing skills. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from DePauw University, where I majored in English Literature and Economics (I minored in Philosophy as well). I then pursued a Master's degree in International Relations and Finance with a focus on Global Energy from Johns Hopkins University. While at DePauw, I founded an elementary-school age reading tutoring program aimed at helping students read at grade level. Our team of 8 DePauw tutors invested over 1,500 hours helping more than 50 students reach their reading goals. I also served as a Junior and Senior mentor to two groups of first-year DePauw students. As a mentor, I guided students through the social, academic, and personal challenges they faced as they became members of the DePauw community. Academically, I helped students learn how to approach learning and studying broadly, as well how to research, read, and write at the University level effectively. I continue this work with DePauw students as a volunteer alumni mentor today. I take a holistic approach to tutoring. Beyond helping students through specific technical challenges they face in their reading and writing, I also aim to teach students fundamental approaches to learning that empower them to learn effectively beyond our work together. I also give due attention to the myriad psychological challenges struggling students face. I help students discover confidence not only in their innate abilities, but also in their ability to improve skills over time. The most rewarding part of tutoring for me is to watch a student embrace that confidence as they begin to tackle challenges energetically. I scored in the 99th percentile on both the Verbal Reasoning and Writing sections of the GRE, and in the 95th percentile on the Quantitative Reasoning section. I performed well on the GRE exam because I focused on learning how to take the test rather than on learning the various areas of knowledge tested. Learning how to take the GRE exam is the surest way to boost your scores. I graduated as a Top 3 (in terms of GPA) English Literature major at DePauw University. I was also named the most outstanding English Literature major at the University during my Junior year. Beyond my academic experience in English, I served as the Editor-in-Chief of DePauw's 1,000-copy biannual Literary magazine. I led a team of 25 reviewers and 5 section editors who covered student submission in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Photography, and Art.

Hobbies

As much as I love learning, I love sharing my passion for learning even more. My passion for knowledge spans an ever-changing array of topics, which most recently includes: physics, Artificial Intelligence, fly fishing, Buddhism, and Ancient history, to name a few. I read incessantly and listen to podcasts daily. I'm constantly trying to share my favorite books/episodes with anyone who will listen! I'm a hot yoga enthusiast, especially Vinyasa power flow yoga. I consider my yoga practice to be a moving meditation that helps me keep both my mind and body right. I've loved learning how to relinquish control of poses and my thoughts and instead surrendering to my breath. I'm obsessed with Fantasy Football, which keeps me connected to a game I played through college. I love how Fantasy Football keeps me connected to my High School and College friends--I'm in leagues with both groups.
